"THE DINNER
"There was once a man who had the foolish habit of hypnotizing
himself. Refusing to face reality, he habitually escaped his
anxiety by falling under a self-induced trance. One evening he
entered a restaurant and ordered a full dinner. While waiting
to be served he felt disturbed by something and so sought relief
by hypnotizing himself.
While still under hypnosis, he ate his dinner. He awakened just
as he finished. Looking down at the empty plates he called with
annoyance to the waiter. 'What kind of service is this? I asked
for a full dinner and this is what you give me.'
People dwelling under spiritual self-hypnosis cannot recognize
higher truth when it is served to them."
Vernon Howard, Inspire Yourself, p. 73
